AVERAGE formula practice
A free Excel formula lesson for High Court Clerk C.P.T. preparation.
What it does
AVERAGE finds the arithmetic mean of the numbers in a selected range of Excel cells.
=AVERAGE(range)=AVERAGE(B2:B6) finds the mean of the marks in cells B2 through B6.Practice in a worksheet
Use the workbook below to find the average mark. The exercise opens as soon as the worksheet is ready.
How to use AVERAGE in a practical
Choose AVERAGE when a task asks for a mean or typical numeric value, such as the average mark across several entries. It adds the numeric cells in the range and divides by the count of those numbers. The colon in B2:B6 selects every cell from B2 through B6, so you do not have to name each one separately.
Check the range before you enter the formula. A heading or an existing summary row does not belong with the individual marks. Blank cells are ignored by AVERAGE, while a cell containing zero is counted as a number; those two cases can produce different results. If a displayed average has decimals, follow the formatting requested by the task rather than changing the underlying calculation.
In a timed practical, read whether the question asks for a mean or a total before choosing the function. Enter the formula in the requested result cell, confirm the selected range, and compare the result with the smallest and largest values. A normal average should lie between them.
Check before submitting
- Are you averaging the individual values, not a summary row?
- Are blanks and zero values being interpreted correctly?
- Is the displayed result between the smallest and largest entries?
